Crewel Linen: Unfinished Business
An Installation by Cate Bourke
A centennial/commemorative work in memory of the 146 individual workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City in 1911. Made up of an eight foot length length of shirt weight cloth, hung from overhead, for every one of the victims, with the dead woman's name embroidered in linen on each panel. Also on view by the same artist, a participatory installation entitled Study in Black and White which explores the ways in which U.S. institutions have served to construct and sustain racial disparities in this country's socioeconomic conditions.
